Julius Leis of Walden, NY, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2017. He was 98.
The son of the late Louis and Sarah Cohen Leis, he was born September 10, 1918 in Bronx New York.
He moved to Walden when he was five, and attended school there. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Madison 1939 and served in the United States Army and the US Army Air Force from 1942-1946.
He married Shirley Gold on May 19, 1946, continued to live in Walden and raised his children there.
He was an active member and central figure in the Walden Jewish Community Center, founded by his father, and longtime chair of the cemetery committee. He was also an active member of B'nai B'rith.
He owned and managed Leis Lingerie along with his father until its closure in 1972.
In 2008 he brought his characteristic energy and can-do spirit to the Esplanade residence in White Plains, NY, where he was nicknamed "The Mayor".
He was the beloved brother of Phil, father of Bobbi (Simon), Michal (Moshe) and Andrea (Bob), grandfather of eight and great-grandfather of nineteen.
He was predeceased by Shirley, his wife of 62 years, and sisters Selma and Miriam.
A funeral service was held Friday, January 13, 2017, at Millspaugh Funeral Home, Walden, NY.
Burial was in Beth Hillel Cemetery in Walden, NY.
