Emilie N. (Nelson) Johnson

Emilie N. Johnson, of Montgomery, NY, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2024, peacefully in her Montgomery home. She was 69 years old.

She was the daughter of the late Edwin Nelson Sr. and Bertha Monell Nelson. Emmy Lou, as her family affectionally called her, was born November 13, 1954, in Newburgh, NY.

Emilie worked as an account clerk for N.Y.S. Department of Corrections, in Wallkill, NY, and retired, after 30 plus years of service, in 2010. She was an active member of Goodwill church, especially in the programs for women. She also enjoyed playing the bells, at New Hurley and Wallkill Reformed churches, and was involved with Outside Kairos and Tres Dias.

She loved traveling, especially by motorcycle, with her beloved husband of nearly 47 years, Tom. They visited every state park and every state in the continental United States, including Alaska. Emmy always enjoyed taking the back roads to explore the scenic ways. She loved being outdoors and was constantly focused on bettering the environment around her. She also loved to play Scrabble and watch Jeopardy. Emmy never had a mean word to say about anyone and had the most gentle demeanor.

Her family considered her the “World’s Best Grandma.”

Survivors include her husband- Tom Johnson, son- Tommy Johnson, daughter- Maryann Ciardullo & Rich Ciardullo, daughter- Melanie Hasselbach, daughter- Lea Johnson & Jolvonte Monroe, daughter- Jema Johnson & Dan Smith; grandchildren- Kasey, Simon, Roman, Waverly, Willow, Kilyan, Ruary, Mallex, Daniel Jr., Mason, and Jianna; sister- Kay Hansen, and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was predeceased by her parents and brothers: Edwin Nelson Jr., Nels Nelson Sr., Raymond Nelson, and Kurt Nelson.

Visitation and memorial service will be Sunday, April 7, 2024, 4pm-5pm at Goodwill Church, 2135 Route 208, Montgomery, NY 12549.

A funeral service will follow after at 5pm at the church.

Burial will be on Monday, April 8, 2024 in Orange County Veteran’s Cemetery in Goshen, NY.
