David B. Smiley of Clermont, FL, formerly of Montgomery, NY, passed at home under hospice care on Friday, June 2, 2017, with his wife and daughter at his side.  He was 63.

The son of the late Ralph O. Smiley and Orie Ware Smiley, he was born October 06, 1953 in Montgomery.

Dave was a lifetime member of the Montgomery Volunteer Fire Department Fleet Hook and Ladder, active for 38 years in his community. He worked his way through the ranks to become chief. While serving as chief he originated the stop DWI program at the Valley Central High School. After that it spread throughout the fire departments in the county. For many years Dave worked at the First Presbyterian Church at the oyster dinner. Dave and his wife Susan traveled all over America in their trailer. He was an avid gardener, growing all his own vegetables and countless flowers for Susan. Dave was passionate about NASCAR, especially Jeff Gordon. He was also a lifelong Oakland Raiders fan; but most of all he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather to his girls.

He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Orange County DPW and was a fire dispatcher for Orange County 911.

Survivors include his Wife, Susan Haas Smiley; Daughter, Alexandra Petrashek and her husband Jason
Granddaughters Jemma and Lani; and Sister Susan.
