James J Monroe

February 12, 1927 ~ January 8, 2018 (age 90) 90 Years Old

James J Monroe of Maybrook, N.Y., a resident of the area, passed away Monday, January 8, 2018, in Newburgh.  He was 90. 

The son of the late Horace and Eva Lewis Monroe, he was born February 12, 1927 in West Point.  

He served in the Navy during World War II as a Seabee, an accomplishment he was deeply proud of. He was a retired Teamster for Local 445 in Newburgh. In addition, "Sarge" as he was known, was a local assistant boy scout leader. 

He was the widower of Janet Kavana Monroe. He was also predeceased by his youngest son, Todd K Monroe, daughter - in - law, Eileen Monroe, and nine of his brothers and sisters. Survivors include his sons, James J Monroe II of Queensbury, Scott B Monroe and his wife, Carol, of Montgomery; his daughter and caregiver, Melissa Hillegas of Maybrook; sister, Joan DePew of Pennsylvania; grandsons, Christian Monroe and his wife, Maureen, of Queensbury, Scott, Sean and Thomas Monroe of Montgomery; granddaughters, Alison Monroe and her long time boyfriend, Mark Harrington, of Schaghticoke, Jamie and Gerit Hillegas of Maybrook; great grandchildren including Makayla, Devlyn,  and Portyr Monroe, Nolan and Rory Harrington, and Ryker Joseph Carney.  


Visitation will be Wednesday, January 10, 2018 from 4-7 at Millspaugh Funeral Home, 22 Bank St., Walden, NY 12586.

Funeral services will be Thursday, January 11, 2018, 10:00 A.M. at the funeral home.Rev. James Van Houten will officiate.

Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in New Windsor, NY.
