Welcome to the memorial page for

June Elizabeth (Gildersleeve) Velie

March 12, 1927 ~ December 22, 2017 (age 90) 90 Years Old

June Elizabeth Velie of New Castle, PA passed away peacefully on December 22, 2017 at Shenango on the Green in New Wilmington, PA. She was ninety years old.
June was born on March 12, 1927 in Maybrook, NY, daughter of Mamie and Earl Gildersleeve. She attended Russell Sage College in Troy, NY where she earned her BS in Medical Technology. Her first job was at St Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh, NY. There she met her beloved husband of 63 years, Harold Townsend Velie. They were married on September 3, 1955 in Maybrook, NY.
June was a devoted wife and loving mother. After 16 years of putting her career on hold to raise her children, she returned to work as a Medical Technologist at the American Red Cross in Farmington, CT. She worked there until her retirement after years of devoted service and earning great respect from peers and colleagues.
As a homemaker, none could rival June. Her home was immaculate, her castle, and all who visited received a warm welcome. She had a talent for decorating, an eye for color and could make any house a home. She was also an excellent cook and baker. No one left June’s house hungry!
June very much enjoyed travel—especially when it involved meeting dear friends from Nyack and Rochester, NY. Travel destinations were many and varied and included Vermont B&B’s and distant places such as Wales, England, Scandinavia and a memorable river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest.
June’s spunk, laughter and often passionate opinions will be fondly remembered. She was one of a kind-- we will sorely miss our “June Bug”. May she rest in peace with our Lord.
June leaves behind her beloved husband, Harold Townsend, her son Scott Townsend, daughter Kimberly Ann, grandsons Nicholas Scott, Tyler John, Michael Alexander (“Noodle”) and brother Leo (June) Gildersleeve and nieces Debbie Phelps, Becky (Mike) Pearson, Ellen Velie and Holly (Jeff) Gildersleeve Eng and Nephews Sam Phelps III, Richard (Nancy) Phelps and Douglas (Paige) Velie and Stephen Velie. She is preceded in death by her parents Mamie and Earl Gildersleeve, sister Helen Phelps, brother-in-law Samuel Phelps II, brother Richard Gildersleeve and beloved sister-in-law Val Gildersleeve.

Special thanks to the kind and caring staff at Shenango on the Green in New Wilmington, PA
