Charles "Ray" Stuhmer of Montgomery, NY, passed away July 5, 2025 in Middletown. He was 93.
The son of the late Charles Stuhmer and Erma Schwarz Stuhmer, he was born October 15, 1931 in Gardiner, NY. A bit of a mischievous boy in his youth, Ray began working in apple orchards at a young age, an experience that laid the foundation for his strong work ethic and lifelong commitment to providing for his family. At 19, he met the love of his life, and together they shared 73 wonderful years of devotion and partnership.
Ray proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He later worked as an installer and repairman for Verizon Telephone in Newburgh, NY, before retiring. In his free time, Ray enjoyed golf, bowling, traveling, and cheering on the Yankees and Rangers. He was also a talented woodworker, crafting picture frames, quilt racks, and Christmas decorations, which have become treasured family heirlooms. A man at peace in routine and nature, Ray was often found outside mowing and tending to his vegetable garden.
Ray took great pride in his entire family and was a steady, loving presence throughout their lives. A quiet yet strong and gentle man, he lived with integrity, fairness, and decency. He not only taught his children right from wrong but instilled these values into each generation to come. This is his legacy, and we are forever grateful for him.
Ray is survived by his wife Betty, daughter Shirley Metzing, daughter Cathy Meier and her husband Michael, son Steve Stuhmer and his wife Lisa; grandchildren Taylor, Logan, Casey, Erin, Marshall, Rhianna and Sayre; great grandchildren Ayla, Zayn, Calleigh, Cameron, Landon, Lucas, Leonna and Levi; and nieces, nephews and extended family. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his brother George Stuhmer, his wife Fran and their daughter, Lyn.
Visitation will take place Wednesday, July 9, 2025, 10am-12pm at Millspaugh Funeral Home, 22 Bank St., Walden, NY 12586. A funeral service will follow at 12pm at the funeral home.
