Obituary

Elizabeth “Marie” Karsten Marshall of Pine Bush, NY, a life-long resident of the area, died Monday, February 8, 2021, in Middletown, NY.  She was 94.

The youngest daughter of the late Joseph Martin and Harriet Cullen Ahearn, she was born July 31, 1926 in Campbell Hall, NY. A graduate of Montgomery High School, where she met her husband William R. Karsten in ninth grade. Elizabeth worked as a nurse at the Middletown Psychiatric Center, Middletown, NY while raising her family and helping run the family farm. She retired as an LPN from Valley View Nursing Home in Goshen, N.Y.

Marie’s retirement was an active one. She traveled with friends and family and was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Auxiliary in Post #2064 Maybrook and the American Legion Post #1308 in Pine Bush. She loved doing crafts, puzzle books and was up for any good adventure with her grandchildren. She picked up an interest in baseball in her 70’s and became a fan -- most days -- of the Yankees and in particular her favorite Yankee Bernie Williams.

Marshall was a frequent worshiper at Church of the Infant Saviour in Pine Bush for Saturday night mass and a lifelong parishioner at Holy Name of Mary Church in Montgomery.

Marshall is survived by her four children; Elizabeth and Peter Kallet of Estero Florida and Kathryn Malina of Thompson Ridge, Joseph and Joyce Karsten of Pittsboro, North Carolina and William R. Karsten, Jr. of Bullville.  She is also survived by four grandchildren; Kristie Ackert of Florida, Emily Malina of Philadelphia and Kyle Karsten and Britta Karsten-Lewter both of North Carolina. She also had two great-granddaughters Payton Karsten and Henley Lewter and a great grandson Joseph Bear Karsten, all of North Carolina.

Marie was the widow of William R. Karsten, who passed away in 1991, and John Marshall, who died in 2000.

She was predeceased by her son-in-law Thomas A. Malina.
