Mario Balacich of Montgomery, NY, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2025, in Newburgh, surrounded by his loving family. He was 74.
The son of the late Antonio Balacich and Emilia Paris Balacich, he was born December 5, 1950, in the tiny village, Brdo, on the border of Croatia and Italy.
Mario joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 15, and came to America in 1970. Before finding his way to the Hudson Valley in 1984, he owned and operated several restaurants. He is best known for his beloved 88 Charles Street Cafe’ in Montgomery, where he dedicated over 34 years to provide his customers with the best possible dining experience.
He is survived by his loving wife, Patti Balacich, his stepson, Damon Hurd, stepdaughter, Holly Colella and her husband Christopher, his step grandchildren, Caelyn and Lily Hurd, Sara, Emma, Lauren, and Hannah Colella, his sister, Rita Balacich, his brother Isodoro Balacich and his wife Etta, his sister, Maria Balacich, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Albino Balacich, Attilio Balacich, and Antonio Balacich.
His granddaughters were truly the greatest loves of his life, and he will be deeply missed by all those who loved him most.
Visitation will take place Thursday, March 6, 2025, 4pm-8pm at Goodwill Church, 2135 State Route 208, Montgomery, NY 12549.
A funeral mass will be held Friday, March 7, 2025, at 12pm at Most Precious Blood, 42 Walnut St., Walden, NY 12586.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.
