Ronald Leighton “Ronnie” VanderEssen, 76, of Wallkill, New York, passed away on April 16, 2026, in Bronx, New York. He was born on March 23, 1950, in Newburgh, New York, to the late Victor VanderEssen and Margaret McKechnie VanderEssen Crans. He was a graduate of Wallkill High School, Class of 1968.

Ronnie was a dedicated switch technician for Frontier Communications for many years, where he built a career marked by reliability and skill. He was also a proud member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, valuing the friendships and community it brought into his life.

Ronnie will be remembered for his love of life’s simple joys and the passions that brought him happiness. A devoted New York Yankees fan, he rarely missed a game and took great pride in cheering on his team through every season. In his younger years, Ronnie also enjoyed stock car racing, finding excitement in the speed, camaraderie, and thrill of the track.

Known for his quick wit and incredible sense of humor, Ronnie had a special way of making people laugh and feel at ease. His positive attitude and vibrant energy left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He especially loved going out to eat, always enjoying good food and even better company.

Above all, Ronnie loved his family deeply. His grandchildren were the center of his world, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

He is survived by his former spouse and devoted caregiver, Eileen VanderEssen of Wallkill, New York; his daughter, Kathleen VanderEssen of High Point, North Carolina; his son, Matthew VanderEssen and his wife Alexis of Walden, New York; his grandchildren, Alicia, Alexa, Amanda, and Adam Gomez, and Ethan and Maia VanderEssen; his great-grandchildren, Jalen Braddy and Logan Solomon; his brother William Crans of New Paltz, New York; his sister Patricia Crans of Bradenton, Florida; his brother Peter VanderEssen of Rock Tavern, New York; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his stepfather, William Crans; his brother, Ian VanderEssen; and his sister, Beverly Crans Lovelace.

Cremation and services will take place privately.

Ronnie will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
