Phyllis Joan Charron Hausner, 87, died surrounded by loved ones on Saturday, November 17, 2018, in Roanoke, Va.
Born on February 21, 1931, in Ithaca, N.Y., to Philip J. Charron and Helen Sheehy Charron, she was raised in Monticello and Walden, N.Y.
She attended SUNY Albany where she earned a degree in English and met her future husband, Robert (Bob) Hausner. They married in 1953 and lived happily together for 59 years.
Phyllis taught Latin and English while Bob served in the United States Navy in Florida. Careers took them back to upstate New York where their children, Brian and Kathryn, were born.
The family eventually moved to Brookhaven, N.Y., where Phyllis received a master’s degree in library science and worked as a librarian at Bellport High School. Phyllis and Bob loved living on Long Island, joining the yacht club and cruising to Block Island, R.I., and Mystic, Conn.
Upon retirement the Hausners moved south to Hampstead, N.C., living on a golf course and enjoying a rich social life. They later settled in Salem, Va., to be closer to their daughter’s family. A weekly trip to the library was always planned.
Phyllis was a voracious reader, an avid golfer and a master bridge player. She immersed herself into arts and crafts, pottery, knitting, crocheting and assembling/framing puzzles. She was an exceptional seamstress making many garments for her daughter and herself throughout the years. She also collected Byer’s Choice figures. She adored dogs and had several close canine companions over the years, including Captain and Dewey.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert; her daughter-in-law, Valerie Hausner (Milano); and her parents.
She is survived by her son, Brian and daughter-in-law, Patricia (Ludwig) of Yardley, Pa.; daughter, Kathryn Windley and son-in-law, Linwood, of Roanoke, Va. She is dearly missed by her grandchildren, Douglas Hausner (Elizabeth), Meghan Zoltek (Michael), Brooke and Tara Windley; four great-grandchildren, Mason and Violette Hausner, and Cameron and Owen Zoltek. Also surviving is her sister, Barbara and her husband, Marcus Millspaugh, of Walden, N.Y.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Phyllis and Robert will be laid to rest in a joint service and burial to be held at Wallkill Valley Cemetery, Walden, N.Y., in the spring of 2019 under the care of their family at Millspaugh Funeral Directors, Walden, N.Y. As a remembrance, donations may be made in Phyllis Hausner’s name to the Roanoke Valley SPCA, 1340 Baldwin Ave., Roanoke, VA 24012.
