Alfred Romano, Sr. Obituary

Alfred F. Romano Sr., born in Syracuse, NY on October 9, 1930 to Alfred and Mary Romano died peacefully in Altamonte Springs, FL on December 11, 2020.  He is predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Anna Cavalluzzo Romano and sisters Esther and Josephine.  He is lovingly remembered by sister Lydia Volpe in Oneida, NY.

Al began his career military service immediately after high school.  He was a member of the Loyal Legion of Hurricane Hunters and Commandant of the 8th Air Force NCO Leadership School.  In 1971, he retired after serving as Sgt Major of 3501st Recruiting Group Headquarters.

After the military Al, Anna and family settled in Montgomery, NY where Al continued many years of service and involvement in community.  He joined the U.S. Postal Service initially in Newburgh, NY and then became the first letter carrier for the village of Montgomery until 1998.   Never one to fully retire in the traditional sense, for the last 10 years of his working life Al put his driving skills to good use and drove the school bus for the Valley Central School District.

A life-long devout Catholic, Al was a member of St. Patrick’s Church/Our Lady of the Lake Chapel in Newburgh, NY where he served as usher, eucharistic minister and member of the parish council.  Recently he worshiped at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Altamonte Springs.  In Florida, Al enjoyed going to the golf course with his son Joe, eating good meals at local restaurants and making new friends.  His friends there will miss seeing him take daily walks, feeding the ducks, and checking in on him to be sure his ice cream supply was fully stocked.

He is survived by his three sons: Roger Romano of Santa Cruz, CA, Joseph Romano of Longwood, FL, Alfred Romano, Jr. and wife, Geri Galazzo and granddaughter, Giulia Romano of Wallkill, NY; and his daughter, Susan Kirkpatrick and husband, Steven Kirkpatrick of Redwood City, CA.
