Anthony Jablonski Obituary

Anthony J. Jablonski, of Montgomery, NY, formerly of Flushing, NY, passed away on Wednesday, September 21st, 2016 in Lake Katrine, NY at the age of 91.  Suffering from Alzheimer’s his light dimmed prematurely in his final years.

Tony was the husband of Mary J. Jablonski, and preceded in death by siblings Walter Jablonski, Elizabeth Hughes, Barbara Murphy, Francis Baumgarten, Sophie Traverson, Stella Gramlich, Bessie Szabo and Jackie Jablonski.

He is survived by his daughter Kristen Georgi and her husband Gerry of Warwick, NY; his son David Jablonski and his wife Pamela of Colorado Springs, Colorado; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Having experienced the Great Depression, he was not one to waste, dedicated to maintenance, repair and repurposing everything of utility.

Having a passion for golf as a youth he was a caddy, and occasionally enjoyed 9 or 18 holes on the links. When a young father many memorable holidays, weekends and vacations were spent with his immediate family and relatives.

He proudly served as a Marine Sergeant during World War II stationed in Hawaii. Returning home, he found a rewarding career with the New York City Transit Authority first as a Maintenance of Way foreman. There he developed excellent relationships with his crew before taking on the duties of documenting subway train accidents and finally was in charge of surface maintenance fleet vehicles.

Tony was skilled as a mechanic and accomplished in all phases of construction, freely sharing his knowledge. Always willing to take on difficult tasks, at 70 years old he performed a roofing job on the Flushing home by himself.

He had a passion for American Civil War history with the unfulfilled intention to someday write on the subject. Tony would engage in conversation on any topic even if it was outside of his experience, genuinely interested in the pursuits of others. He encouraged both formal and informal education as a path to success.

Mary and Anthony will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery in Alexandria, Virginia, on August 5, 2019 at 10 am, to be immediately followed by a memorial service.
